If you like collecting Ys games, then yes! Get it! The box is huge and very pretty. Definitely a must-have for every Ys collector.

Ys I & II Complete / Re: Error: An Error Occurred.

I meant that the term USA is usually used on let's say a PS2 game that's physically released for the US market. As this game has only been localized but not really "released" in USA I meant English might be a better word to use. It is definitely not a big deal but I just thought it looked a bit odd.

4
Wow... 80 dollars, that's quite a lot. Well, let me comfort you by saying it doesn't appear that often on Yahoo Japan and it sort of requires using a proxy service (such as www.shoppingmalljapan.com) which will add additional costs. It would probably end up at about $40 in the end.

Oh yes, Ys II Special... I've been meaning to add a download link to that page. I'll do that eventually. :)

Ys I COMPLETE (USA)? Wouldn't Ys I COMPLETE (English) be better as USA is not really a language?  ;)

6
80 dollars sounds like a pretty good deal. 250GB drives seem to cost about 100 dollars here, if not more (200 GB drives cost like 10 dollars less). 300GB drives are usually super expensive though, about twice the price of a 250GB drive, seriously!

7
It isn't very rare. You can buy a new copy on Yahoo Japan for about $20! :)

It is nothing special though, since Falcom Classics I got a Satakore release (equivalent to Nintendo's "Players Choice" releases), they released Falcom Classics Collection instead of a Satakore release of Falcom Classics II.

It is just a 2-disc set with Falcom Classics I and Falcom Classics II. The bonus discs from FC1 LE and FC2 LE are not included.

I've got an info page (including screenshots) about Falcom Classics II on my website. www.digitalsloth.net/ys.

The patch is still in the works. A 100% English patch will be released at some point.

Falcom's only selling the Popular Edition now and that's the same as the standard edition. Get it, it is cheap.

12
I don't remember what to do, but take a look at this walkthrough. I'm sure it'll help you out.

And it comes with Ys COMPLETE WORKS and the "All About Falcom" DVD.

But I think the standard edition box looks nicer, the limited edition looks kinda boring.

Ys: The Oath In Felghana / Re: so...

Felghana is in Germany (Garman on the map).

Five Dragons of Artago is one of Adol's adventures. There's no game about it (yet?) though.

Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys / Re: Vote for your favorite version of Ys IV!
« on: Jun. 01, 2006, 10:12:30 AM »
Oh dear, I'm sorry. A bit of advice: never read anything about a game until you've finished it. Every time I look up something about a game I'm currently playing, I'm always accidentally finding lots of spoilers ruining a lot of the fun.

Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys / Re: Vote for your favorite version of Ys IV!

Ranzor: What happens in DoY doesn't really "happen" -- i.e. Dark Fact is never resurrected, Sara never comes back to life, etc. It's all Hudson's own story and isn't part of the real Ys timeline.

Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim / Re: Hard Mode for PC?

There is no time attack or hard mode in the first version (the one with the white box -- the limited edition). The newer release (greenish box) does come with time attack mode and various difficulty levels, though. (Easy, normal, hard and nightmare, I believe.)

Ys I & II Complete / Re: 2 CDs and 1 DVD Versions?
« on: Jun. 01, 2006, 08:10:08 AM »
Nope, no difference at all. In fact, there's basically no audio difference either, the 44100 audio is of such low quality that it pretty much equals with the 22050 audio.

Hey cool site, good luck with it.I wonder why Xak never expanded beyond the pc engine.

Did you check his site? The PCE versions of Xak I-III are ports! The Xak-series didn't originate on the PCE at all.

There is no 2D sprite code.

No the CGs were made in China, the game was developed on Hawaii.

The Japanese voice actors are just as bad, if not worse. Probably worse, much much worse.

Oh and by the way -- the Japanese voices are certainly not the "original" ones. The game was developed in North America and the Japanese voices were added after the English ones.

Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim / Re: Cheats for PAL Ys:Ark of Napishtim
« on: May. 14, 2006, 10:24:02 AM »
The PAL game is much smaller in size than the the NTSC one, they have removed ALL the extra content (Japanese voices, anime cutscenes, etc).

But I see absolutely no reason whatsoever why anyone who isn't Japanese would want to use Japanese voices instead of English ones.

General / Re: Ys IV: Dawn of Ys How can I play it
« on: May. 11, 2006, 05:22:33 PM »
Beware of the PS2 versions of Ys IV and V. They are horrible.

You want to play Ys IV in English? I think it is time to take a closer look at this website. ;)

Oh and Ys V is not available in English in any form. I advice you to play it anyway, though -- it is an incredible game.

27
Try another virtual CD program like Nero or Alcohol 120%.

1. NightWolve isn't working on PCE games anymore.
2. I guess it depends on the game, but as a general rule: it is really, really hard.

This is just a small post, but check out this store's Ys misspelling. This is by far the worst case.

(By the way, 495SEK is about $67USD! Pretty pricey, don't you think?) ;D

Red Hairdo: YsIII for X68000 was developed by Falcom and Riot reused most of those graphics when they ported it over to Mega Drive. The game isn't as fancy-looking as Dempa Micomsoft's Ys I remake. :)

stevek666: (oh right... esteban, hehe) I'm not much of a music-guy so I think you'd have to ask someone else about that... I know a guy, Vert, who would probably be delighted to do it. :)

I've actually made it to the second mirror maze in the DOS version of Ys I. I got stuck there, though. There's something about it that I like, but I can't put my finger on what.

Ys II SPECIAL (another DOS game) is incredible, though. But most people will disagree with me. I also hate the fact that it is impossible to get past the Ice Ridge ... (the game crashes.) :P

General / Re: How and when did you discover Ys? and...

Oh right. I totally forgot. Twelve years after the last Ys misspelling (YsIV), Konami decided to bring up the trend again. You know, just in case anyone had forgotten about it.

This is the seal from the PS2 version of Ys VI (yeah, I photographed it, I'm too lazy to drag out the scanner from the closet.)

It is JUST spelled like that on the seal -- nowhere else. As if they WANTED to put the fault SOMEWHERE.  :P

I'm using Win68k Highspeed myself. It is -- in my opinion -- the best X68000 emulator. I've been using SX Window 3.0 (OS) with virtual hard drives on it as well. Works like a charm.

Best Ys I: X68000. Awesome gameplay, awesome music, awesome graphics. Everything's awesome and this is definitely the ultimate version of Ys I in my opinion.

Best Ys II: PC-8801. I love this one. The gameplay in particular is fantastic.

Best Ys III: PS2. The graphics are incredible. I love the hand-drawn backgrounds. The X68000 version is a close second.

Best Ys IV: Mask of the Sun. It is the original. The story's fantastic.

Best Ys V: Ys V Expert -- SFC. Identical as the original, but harder. Ys V was too easy.

Best Ys VI: PS2. It is in English. The 3D models are better than the 2D sprites. The game features a full voice over. Too bad the framerate is so low.

THE WORST Ys GAMES

Worst Ys I: DOS. Just terrible. I can't stand this one. Terrible gameplay. Terrible music. Terrible graphics. ...But what to expect? It is a DOS game after all...

Worst Ys II: Famicom. I hate the music, I hate the graphics, I hate the gameplay...

Worst Ys III: PC Engine/Turbo Grafx 16-CD ROM. I hate everything about this one. Mainly the TERRIBLE gameplay. The graphics are awful, the music's dull and the voice acting is ... wow...

Worst Ys IV: PS2. This is THE worst game I have ever played in my life. Period.

Worst Ys V: PS2. This is the #2 worst game I have ever played in my life. Period.

Worst YsVI: PSP. Terrible port. Awful frame rate. Long loading times.

Ys is spelled Y's on:

Ys I Sega Master System (American/European box, cart and  manual -- not in-game)
Ys III Wanderers From Ys (American SNES -- back of the box only)
Ys IV The Dawn of Ys (box, CD and manual -- not in-game)

See the trend here? None of these games were developed nor distributed by Falcom themselves.

General / Re: Ys for X68000

True. It was a series of personal computers only released in Japan. Performance-wise, they were like Amigas.

This particular game were on two 5.25" diskettes, YsIII were on four (three, excluding the user disk). The later X68000 computers featured regular 3.5" diskettes.

A group of hackers known as TEAM MILKHOUSE ported over the PC-9801 versions of Ys I and Ys II to X68000 and unofficially released them on various BBS:es, etc in Japan. These ports are known as True-Ys and True-YsII.

The other Falcom games released on the X68000 computers are Dragon Slayer, Dragon Slayer VI: The Legend of Heroes (ported by T&E) and Star Trader (which featured exclusive content).

Actually, trolls are VERY common nowadays. He he.

By the way -- if you don't like Ys, or "Ys geeks", then why are you here? This is a message board for Ys fans to quote NightWolve himself.

Edit: Whoa! If you don't like Ys, then why are you a member of other Ys boards?

Quote
The content causing the ESRB to change the rating involves more detailed depictions of blood and gore than were considered in the original rating, as well as the presence of a locked-out art file or 'skin' that, if accessed through a third party modification to the PC version of the game, allows the user to play with topless versions of female characters," said the ESRB in a release.

Idiots! "Locked out" -- obviously the PATCH adds the new textures, etc. What if someone would make another patch that allows you to mercilessly rape children or something of that nature -- THEN what would happen? Would they change the rating again?

General / Re: Ancient Ys Vanished: Omen - The Beta... Unveiled ?
« on: May. 02, 2006, 06:50:47 AM »
Nobody has found any differences in the beta since it doesn't "exist." These are magazine scans and the one who made that website has never played this beta.

While it is easy to fake these things (I've made it myself once, hehehe) I still think this is legit. It has yet another reference to Asteka II (YsI has a couple of them) but sure, someone could have had that in mind while faking those screenshots.

I think I'll go make some fake Ys II screenshots. ;)
