Gibberish text
« on: Sep. 06, 2006, 10:50:52 AM »
I finally got Ys6 for PC and I ran the game.  Turns out the game text is all gibberish.  is it because I'm not running JP Windows?

BTW,  <3 PC version.   1920x1200 resultion, all graphics cranked to the max.    :o

You'll most likely need to either run it under Japanese Windows or at least change your regional settings so that they are in Japanese. To do this, you can go to your Start menu, control panel, Regional and Language Options, and in both the Regional Options tab, select Japanese and in the Advanced tab select Japanese and then reboot your computer. This should reboot it into Japanese Windows and allow you to start the game. Of course, if you are using other programs that require you to use English, you'll need to switch the options back at a later time most likely.

Hope this helps,

You ran my old patch for this, correct? That switches the game to ANSI mode and anything untranslated appears as gibberish, as if the Japanese already wasn't gibberish to the average user. If you noticed, some of your items are in English and that's about it. Pretty sure the limits of the patch were stated in the included ReadMe. Anyhow, if you wanna see Japanese, don't use the patch and reboot your PC in Japanese language mode if you're running 2000/XP.

One other possibility: If you yourself didn't run my patch, you downloaded an ISO of a copy that was patched with it. So, that explains the gibberish.

And i just got the game...    :~(

I dont want to buy a PS2 or PSP (don't own either systems) just to play the game.    :~(

Thanks for the explanation though!  ^_^

And yes, I did you your old Ys6.  Good thing I downloaded it back in the day.

Ah. Well, some places still have it for download, like those translation news sites. I used to get some responses about the gibberish text and was quite amused many a times. "Wait a minute, where's the usual Japanese [gibberish] I'm used to!!! I prefer that!!" I loved making fun of that. "But that's gibberish too as far as you're concerned!! Can you read any of it?? Why NO, you can't!!"

But anyhow, that patch was just a WIP demo proving that hacking the game was possible, plus it does completely translate the config utility which was useful in the meantime. Another thing is that if you're running an English/US copy of Win98/ME, the game can actually load after you patch with it. Win9X doesn't have language/locale switching support, so you can't switch to Japanese mode to make it work. Normally you'd need a whole copy of the Japanese version of Win98 or WinME to run it.

Yea, I can read a little bit of Japanese.  Enough that I was able to beat Y4 back in the old days (just knowing towns and items), but not knowing enough Japanese to fully appreciate the game and its storyline.  Thanks for that patch btw!  ^_^

Ah, you almost don't need me. But yeah, that's understandable if you can read some. Better to not use it then.
