Ys 1&2 Complete Installation
« on: Feb. 08, 2006, 02:18:14 AM »
I was hoping someone could help me with a problem I'm having installing Ys 1&2 Complete...  I got my copy (DVD version) from a second hand store in Japan and it appears to be in good condition, but when I try to install I get an error that crashes the installer.  Unfortunately for me, most of the installer is probably in Japanese and for whatever reason shows up as garbled letters and symbols rather than actually in Japanese.  The only line I can read from the error message is the bottom one, which reads D:\ys1_win\save\_??.TXT.  That should be a path to a file on the DVD... I'm not sure if I'm having trouble since my computer refuses to recognize the Japanese letters or what.  Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

You'll need to change your computer's regional settings.

Go to the control panel and select "Dates, languages and national settings" (or something similiar, my OS is not in English)

Then select "National and language settings"

Then click the tab "Languages"

Check the little box next to "Install East Asian language support"

When that is installed, go back to the "National and language settings"-option and click the "Advanced" tab. Now you can select Japanese in the drop-down list. Do that. Restart. Run the installer.

It should work now, otherwise, just copy the entire YS1_WIN and YS2_WIN folders directly from the disc (that works just fine).

DVDs are for suckers. Illegally pirated and stolen videos all the way. No menus. No "DO NOT PIRATE THIS!" screens. No fuss. Only perfection. I honestly only pirate movies because that "don't pirate this" screen annoys me.

Indeed, it's AV time. Check out: ! Sir, the door was open.

There is a second way around this if you dont want to change the region on your computer.  All you need to do is copy all the files on to your computer except the _??.TXT. then take the files and burn a dvd (give it the origional dvd volume name). now when you do the install it will install all the files then you can run the patch at that point.
Someone once said being #1 just ain't realistic.

If you're on Win9X/ME, you will need to install manually like mjmmx says since there's no support for switching to Japanese mode. Here's how:
Quote
Make a folder tree named \FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN somewhere on your hard
drive - C:\FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN for example. Next, go to your Ys COMPLETE
CD or DVD and copy everything to your new local folder from YS1_WIN (for the
LE version) or YS1_CMP (if you've got the XP or PE version), but MINUS the
'save' subfolder! The trick is to exclude that 'save' subfolder because it
contains a text file whose name is encoded with Japanese S-JIS characters.
Any attempt at copying this file by the Setup program or even manually by
using Explorer will result in failure. So, that explains why you can't
install it normally (unless you're booted in Japanese mode, something you
can't do in Windows® 98/ME). Anyway, now on your hard drive you should have
a file/folder tree looking like this:

     C:\FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN\*.*
     C:\FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN\YS1_WIN.EXE
     C:\FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN\DATA\*.*
     C:\FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN\MIDI\*.*
     C:\FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN\WAVE\*.*
     C:\FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN\WAVE\WAVE_44\*.*

Etc. Got it? Good. About the 'wave' folder: If you have the 2
CD Limited Edition set, you'll also have to get the 2nd CD and
continue copying from that. Otherwise, in order to have wave
playback in the game, you'll always have to have the 2nd (Game)
CD inserted or mounted. You're basically doing a FULL install
by copying all the waves to disk. By doing this, you can also
take advantage of the alternate soundtrack that's recently been
released by Psycho DeuceBag, FYI. Anyhow, that should do it. Just run
my patcher after that and you're all set, ya heathen...

Say I had the same problem when installing it on my system.  'Seldane' had the right idea when changing the languages but you need to change the Unicode to japanese to make it work.

Bascially from the control panel access the 'Regional and Language Options', select the 'Advanced' tab and you should see the main option to change your Unicode (you probably have 'English (United States)' in there already).  Change the option to Japanese (you might need your original Windows XP CD to add the needed files) and apply.

After a windows restart you should be able to install the game with no problems, I think ^^.  If that doesn't work, try messing with the other language setting to get it to work :p

Hey, guys.  Just wanted to say thanks for all the help.  I got the games working just fine and got to enjoy a moment of nostalgia...  Now I just have to figure out how to justify *not* blowing a bunch of my hard earned cash on Felghana.  *Shakes fist at Japan outside of his window.* ;)
